Three Indications That Your Clutch Is Failing and How to Deal With It

Anyone with a manual transmission vehicle knows that the most hardworking component is the clutch. Every time that you start or stop the vehicle, you are engaging the clutch, which over time, takes its toll on the part. The friction normally created between the clutch disk, pressure plate and flywheel leads to a lot of heat. This heat is what eventually wears out the clutch. When you are driving a manual vehicle, the harder the pressure you put on these parts, the faster they wear. Remember that the clutch is designed to handle a specific amount of torque, and the moment that it is exceeded, such as when you are hauling something heavy, the wear becomes excessive. Here are three main indicators that your clutch is failing, and how to deal with it.

When the Gears Start Slipping

One of the first indicators that your clutch might fail is when your vehicle's gears or transmission seem to jerk involuntarily as you drive. While the jerking can sometimes be the result of an oil spill on the gears, there are also times when it indicates a bigger problem with the clutch. Note that when engine oil slips onto the gear, it falls onto the clutch and makes it slip from the neutral to the engaged position.

When the Clutch Becomes Tough

Another common sign that your clutch has issues is when it becomes hard to push down or when it starts resting closer to the floor of the car than it did initially. If your vehicle has this problem with the clutch, it is possible that the damage has become extensive and that you need an adjustment. This adjustment is also common with new clutches.

When There Is a Burning Paper Smell

Another common indicator that your clutch has an issue is when you start smelling burning paper. This happens because of the constant heat and friction that result from the pushing in and out of the clutch. It is normally an indication of a thin and worn-out clutch plate. Here, the best solution is to replace the plate.

These are three common indicators that your clutch has an issue. The best way to deal with these problems is by getting a competent repair mechanic to handle the repair process. When an auto mechanic diagnoses the vehicle, they will figure out if the clutch needs an adjustment or total repair.
